Every Angry Word (demo) recorded in Sound Conception Studios. Bristol in 1982 – listen or download

Finish The Story are one of Worcestershire’s lost bands. Sinister, brooding, icy, haunting and ethereal – their music was like nothing else at the time and very little since.

Initially formed for a one off gig, Finish The Story went on to support The Cure and were voted one of the best live bands of 1982 (beating U2), before splitting up without ever releasing a record.

The three core members of Finish The Story; Nicola Mumford (Vocals), Peter Bright (Bass/Guitar) and Garry Smout (Keyboards) hailed from Evesham and Bromsgrove.

The band were born out of tragedy after the death of Stuart Dyke in a car accident. At the time he was Nicola’s boyfriend and bass player with Evesham group The Dancing Did. (BBC)

 Finish The Story

Live Bootleg (CD)

Disc: £4.00

This disc is a record of the live gigs that Finish The Story did between 1981 and 1983. These tracks are the only known live recordings ever made (as far as we know). The quality is not brilliant but the performances are. The first two tracks have only recently been discovered – does anybody know where the recording originates from? The Exeter gig is the audio from a VHS video of the gig.

This is worth getting as it is a rare glimpse into the mythology that was the early Finish The Story.

1. Alone With A Picture In A Matchstick Frame
2. Chant Of The Boxed In Society
3. Dressed Up In White
4. Every Angry Word
5. The Righteous Talk Of Remembers
6. Empty Vessels (Make Most Sound) 7.
The Angel Who Pawned Her Harp
8. Me Accusing Me
9. Contenders To Play
10. Playing At Life

Nicola Mumford: Vocals
Garry Smout: Keyboards
Peter Bright: Guitar and Bass

This is the first time my work has been exhibited in Bristol – A place where I studied, rehearsed with ‘Finish The Story‘ and met Veronica Henry.

Quotes:
“Take up a radical position with Peter Bright, who is borderline anarchic in his thinking and equally bold in his art.” Andrea Charters

“I keep thinking about George Braque who learnt artificial wood graining from his time as a decorator; the story goes that he taught Picasso and these painted renderings of wood surface became a staple of cubism” John Myers

I have got several of my latest prints on show at Bar Chocolat, a cafe in Bristol.

Why not meet up with friends and relax for a while with something from their classic café menu if you are in the area.

Soak up the cosy atmosphere and maybe buy a print?

Print on paperGeorge Braque was born on 13 May 1882, in Argenteuil, Val-d’Oise. He grew up in Le Havre and trained to be a house painter and decorator like his father and grandfather. He also studied (real) painting during evenings at the École des Beaux-Arts, in Le Havre, from about 1897 to 1899. In Paris, he was an apprentice to a decorator and was awarded his certificate in 1902.

Early works were impressionistic, but after seeing the work of the “Fauves” (Beasts) in 1905, Braque adopted a their Fauvist style. This  group  included Henri Matisse and André Derain  etc. Their use of bright, vivid and brilliant colors was their  response to the emotional side of artistic representation.

Braque’s paintings of 1908–1913 reflected a new interest in geometry and simultaneous (multi) perspective. He conducted an intense study of the effects of light,  perspective and the technical means that painters use to represent these effects, seeming to question the most standard of artistic conventions.  This was the beginning of Cubism… (?)

Old Russian review of This Window

Cassette Culture 1989 - 2009 by This Window

This is probably the most indepth interview about This Window: gravejibes.com (We are on page 64).

This also includes arly pictures of Finish The Story (some never been seen before) and some words of wisdom from Jake Bright (producer, instrumentalist extraordinaire) and a very generous review of our release ‘Cassette Culture 1989 – 2009’.

Finish the Story – Playing at Life – Video

Here is a blast from the past – there is even a brief glimpse of me playing my trusty Shergold Meteor in the 1980’s.

Live footage of Finish the Story at Exeter Art College Feb 1983 mixed with 8 track studio version from 1981/2, some new images, original sequences and ‘lost’ shots – such as the bedroom doorway from the farm (R.I.P) and very early footage of Nicola at farm window — not wanting to play! Even very rare footage of me playing guitar live.
